In high school football games:

Fueled by a dominating victory in their season opener, the Venice High School Gondoliers carried the momentum into their home opener Friday, September 7th, defeating Taft High School of Woodland Hills 35-27.

After earning a 42-14 victory over San Fernando High School Friday, August 31st, the Gondoliers (2-0) put on the pressure early in the game against Taft, jumping out to a comfortable 35-0 lead.

But Taft (0-1) would not go away and cut the deficit to 35-27 before Venice was able to hold off the challenge and secure the win with an interception by J.R. McConico with less than a minute remaining.

The Gondoliers have a bye this week and are next scheduled to play rival Santa Monica High School at Santa Monica College Corsair Field Friday, September 21st.

The Westchester High School Comets opened the season with authority by earning a 50-20 victory over host Manual Arts High School Friday, September 7th.

The Comets (1-0) were led by running back Andre Buford, who finished with 11 carries for 220 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the victory.

Westchester will next face host Taft High School of Woodland Hills in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, September 14th.

The Santa Monica High School Vikings got off to a quick start on offense on their way to a 46-21 season-opening victory at home over Hueneme High School of Oxnard Friday, September 7th.

The Vikings (1-0) were ahead 21-6 at the end of the first quarter and maintained control against Hueneme (0-1) for the remainder of the game.

Running back Vince Lawrence led the Viking offense with three touchdowns on 64 yards rushing.

Senior quarterback Ryan Katz finished 11-of-23 for 255 yards passing and two touchdowns. John Dunn caught two touchdown passes and finished with 120 yards receiving.

Max Monbouquette led the defense with 12 tackles.

The Vikings are next scheduled to host Palisades High School at 7 p.m. Friday, September 14th.

St. Bernard High School was defeated 17-14 by host Culver City High School in the season-opening game Friday, September 7th.

After trailing Culver City 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Vikings (0-1) tied the score with a touchdown in the second quarter.

St. Bernard added another touchdown in the third quarter, but Culver City (1-0) responded with a touchdown of its own in the quarter and a 28-yard field goal by the Centaurs made the difference.

The Vikings will next host Valley Christian High School in a non-league game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 14th.

The St. Monica High School Mariners were defeated 34-6 by host St. Anthony High in their season opener Friday, September 7th.

The Mariners (0-1) will next host Salesian High School in a non-league game scheduled at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 15th.
