After struggling in the pre-league season, the Venice High School Gondoliers sailed to a second Western League victory with a 38-0 defeat of host University High School Friday, October 24th.

The Gondoliers (2-5, 2-0) lost in five consecutive non-league games this season but are turning things around in the Western League, where they have won league titles the past few seasons.

Venice will next host Palisades High in a league game at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 30th.

The Westchester High School Comets scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter against visiting Palisades High School to send the Western League game into overtime, but they came up just short in a 21-20 loss Friday, October 24th.

The Comets (2-5, 1-1) trailed Palisades 14-0 heading into the fourth quarter but evened the score on touchdowns by running back Andre Buford and quarterback Chris Jacobs.

Buford led Westchester with 19 carries for 160 yards rushing and Fred Johnson added 135 yards rushing on 14 carries. Jacobs finished seven-of-nine passing for 122 yards.

Westchester will next play at Fairfax High in a league game at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 30th.

The St. Bernard High School Vikings were defeated 22-6 by visiting Cathedral High School in a Del Rey League game Friday, October 24th.

The Vikings scored a touchdown on a four-yard run by Jarrad Shaw in the fourth quarter but it was too late to overcome the lead of Cathedral, which held an 8-0 advantage at halftime.

Quarterback Malcolm Mitchell finished eight-of-16 passing for 113 yards and running back Ryan Richard added 100 yards on 25 carries for St. Bernard (1-6, 1-3).

The Vikings will next face visiting Serra High in a league game at 5 p.m. Friday, October 31st.

The St. Monica High School Mariners racked up 20 unanswered points in the second half but came up short in a 32-27 loss to St. Genevieve High School in a Santa Fe League game Saturday, October 25th.

The loss keeps the Mariners (0-7, 0-2) winless this season.

Running back Hector Santiesteban led St. Monica with 25 carries for 162 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Mike Holubowski added two more touchdowns for the Mariners.

St. Monica will next play at St. Anthony High in a league game at 7 p.m. Friday, October 31st.
