In high school football games:

After earning a commanding victory in their season opener, the Westchester High School Comets were defeated 7-0 by host Taft High School of Woodland Hills in a non-league game Friday, September 14th.

The Comets (1-1), who picked up a 50-20 victory over Manual Arts the week before, struggled on offense against Taft, earning just 20 passing yards.

Taft went ahead for good with a touchdown late in the first quarter.

Westchester is next scheduled to play its home opener against Washington High School at 7 p.m. Friday, September 21st.

The St. Bernard High School Vikings racked up three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to take a 38-17 victory in their home opener against Valley Christian High School Friday, September 14th.

The Vikings (1-1) fell behind 7-3 in the first quarter but went ahead 10-7 at halftime after quarterback Ryan Simpson threw a long 80-yard touchdown pass to Sherman Ratliff in the second quarter.

St. Bernard added another touchdown in the third quarter but Valley Christian (1-2) came back to tie the score at 17-17 with a field goal and touchdown.

The Vikings then bolted ahead for good with three consecutive touchdowns, including two by Adam Long on a 96-yard kickoff return and a two-yard run.

In their next game, the Vikings will play at Palos Verdes High at 3 p.m. Friday, September 21st.

In their first home game of the season at St. Bernard High School Saturday, September 15th, the St. Monica High School Mariners were shutout 26-0 by Salesian High School.

The Mariners (0-2) trailed 7-0 at halftime and Salesian added 19 more points in the third quarter to seal the victory.

Derek Brandt finished with nine carries for 30 yards rushing for St. Monica.

The Mariners will next host Malibu High School in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 22nd.

The Venice High School Gondoliers had a bye Friday, September 14th.

The Gondoliers (2-0), the 15th-ranked team in the Southland by the Los Angeles Times will play rival Santa Monica High School at Santa Monica College Corsair Field in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, September 21st.
