Absolutely Halloween, an original holiday-themed musical, has returned to the Santa Monica Playhouse for the sixth year in a row.

Performances of the interactive mini-classic tale are scheduled at 12:30 and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 30 and 31 at the playhouse, 1211 Fourth St., Santa Monica.

The holiday story follows the aptly named “Candy,” a sweet young girl who learns some surprising lessons about life, love, laughter and sugar, from an array of “zany” characters who take her on a magical All Hallow’s Eve adventure, a playhouse spokesperson explains. The show is directed by Chris DeCarlo, with words and music by DeCarlo, Evelyn Rudie and Matthew Wrather.

Absolutely Halloween is one in a series of original Rudie-DeCarlo fairytales that make up the 40-year-old Santa Monica Playhouse’s award-winning Family Theatre Musical Matinee Series for Kids 2 to 102, providing an experience the entire family can enjoy.

The show features Actors’ Repertory Theatre members Celeste Akiki, Tim Chadwick, Melissa Gentry and Cydne Moore, with special guest appearances by Leah Artenian and Nicole Foti, and Serena Dolinsky as “Cattypuss.” The costumes are designed by award-winning designer Ashley Hayes, with production design by The Attic Room.

As witching hour approaches, participants learn valuable lessons about team spirit, friendship, sharing, making choices and the value of moderation, especially as it relates to treats and sweets, the playhouse spokesperson says.

Tickets for youths aged 12 and under are $10.50, and $12.50 for adults. Advance reservations are required; call The Playhouse box office at (310) 394-9779 ext. 2. Halloween Special: come in costume, and get two-for-one tickets to any future Family Theatre production. Free face painting is offered before both shows on Oct. 30 and 31.
