A Jacaranda music series concert will be performed at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica, 1220 Second St.
Jacaranda is a classical music series known for rarely heard and modern music, which takes its inspiration from Russia’s nesting Matryoshka dolls, an event promoter says.
The centerpiece of the program is a 1979 tribute to three leading Russian composers of the 20th century by the composer Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998) — Hommage to Stravinsky, Prokofiev & Shostakovich.
Pianist Danny Holt will perform Shostakovich’s Preludes & Fugues 11 & 12. Yana Reznik will perform Three Pieces from Cinderella, and Vicki Ray will perform Stravinsky’s Sonata. Then, together they will perform the Schnittke tribute.
After intermission, the Lyris Quartet will perform Stravinsky’s Concertino, and Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 3.
Holt is a member of The Robin Cox Ensemble, and can be seen performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its New Music Group.
Making her Jacaranda debut, Reznik, born in Russia, has appeared at Alice Tully Hall, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia. Reznik made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2002 as a winner of the Artists International Competition.
Ray, who helped close the 2010-11 Jacaranda season, is artistic director of the California E.A.R. Unit and Xtet.
