The Jennifer Diamond Cancer Foundation will host its Ninth Annual Celebrity Regatta at the Del Rey Yacht Club in Marina del Rey Sunday, June 26.

The race, which is scheduled to begin at noon, is intended to provide awareness about the free cancer-related services that the foundation provides to the public. The foundation additionally hopes the event will help inform the public about its new headquarters in Chatsworth, its Cancer Information Library, and its many free programs.

Among those scheduled to appear at the event is Abby Sunderland, who, in 2010, attempted to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world. Sunderland made international headlines during her dramatic rescue in the Indian Ocean. The master of ceremonies for the event will be Fritz Coleman from KNBC TV.

“We are tremendously excited about the Jennifer Diamond Celebrity Regatta and its ability to let the public know about our foundation and the free services we provide to cancer patients throughout California,” foundation President Harvey Diamond said.

“Our goal is to educate and empower thousands of people in the community with cancer, helping them to lead a better quality of life and increasing their chance of survival.”

The celebrity regatta was founded after the foundation’s namesake, Jennifer Diamond, lost her battle with cancer of the appendix, a rare form of cancer, at the age of 30. Diamond had asked her parents to try to help others with cancer using the knowledge that they had gained through their experience.

In 2002, the Jennifer Diamond Cancer Foundation was formed and in January 2004 it became a public charity, providing the knowledge and tools, free of charge, for all those suffering with cancer and their families. The foundation began by providing local communities with newly designed Cancer Information Libraries, which are free and open to the public, and are equipped with hundreds of books and videos on cancer and the most current treatments.

The Del Rey Yacht Club is at 13900 Palawan Way, Marina del Rey.
