The John Wayne Cancer Institute has received a $5 million gift from Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson. The funds will be used to expand existing research and develop additional fields of study in cancer research.
The institute intends to continue its affiliation with Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica.
Adelson is a member of the John Wayne Cancer Institute board of directors and chairman and chief executive officer of Las Vegas Sands Corp., which owns the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas and the Venetian Macao in China.
Dr. Miriam Adelson has devoted her career to internal medicine and emergency medicine.
She heads the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Clinics both in Tel Aviv and Las Vegas.
The clinics have treated thousands of heroin and cocaine drug addicts in the methadone system.
The couple plans to open other such clinics.
Following her graduation from Tel Aviv University Sackler Medical School with her M.D. degree, she became the head physician in the areas of internal medicine and emergency medicine for the Rokach (Hadassah) Hospital in Tel Aviv.
