The Juneteenth Celebration Committee, in collaboration with the Pico Neighborhood Association, is presenting the 12th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 19th, at the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica.
The free event will start with an opening procession and feature a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation by local ministers.
Lulu Washington’s Modern, Jazz and African Dance Troupe, the Blackstreet U, the S.A. Puppet Theatre and local gospel choirs will provide live entertainment.
The purpose of the event is to promote cultural awareness and offer historical perspective on Juneteenth.
Juneteenth is recognized as the first celebrated holiday for African-Americans in the United States, commemorating the day when slaves received the delayed word of their freedom.
