Several weeks ago it was reported that Greg Dair — together with several other California Yacht Club juniors — had flown to Annapolis, Maryland to compete in trials to become members of a U.S. team.
The U.S. team is to compete in the national “opti” event in Trinidad.
Dair returned to Marina del Rey a winner, having been selected in the final round, as a member of the team.
Only 45 were chosen in this competition among 182 juniors from the U.S.
Dair will be among the youngest members of this elite group of junior sailors. He is 12 years old.
The events on his sailing schedule this year include several compulsory clinics and training sessions in his boat, Optimist, which closely resembles the sabot which is far more popular here in Marina del Rey and King Harbor junior sailing programs.
These eight-foot boats are sailed single-handed.
This month, Dair will travel with a chaperon and his teammates to Flanders, Belgium to represent the U.S. in the European Youth Regatta.
