Junior sailors ages eight to 15 will race to earn the title of West Coast champion at the West Coast Optimist Championships scheduled Saturday and Sunday, July 11th and 12th at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey.

Racing will begin at noon each day from the yacht club, 4469 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey.

The field of more than 50 young racers includes national champions and sailors who have traveled as far away as New Zealand. All will compete for bragging rights in the western United States.

The event features a multiple-race format in which the young sailors will contest no less than ten races over two days, with the low-point total determining the winner.

The youths will race in one of two groups — Green fleet for the less experienced sailors, and Championship fleet for the veterans. Championship fleet will race about a mile off of Venice Beach.

Prizes include Typhoon Opti Gear, Oakley sunglasses and custom-made flag awards.
