Mar Vista Community Council member Kate Anderson has been named the new deputy chief of staff for the recently re-elected Rep. Jane Harman (D-Venice).

Anderson’s role will be to integrate policy matters between Harman’s Washington and Los Angeles offices, and to ensure that the congresswoman’s policy agenda is well articulated locally. The Mar Vista resident will be based in Harman’s El Segundo office.

“I’m thrilled to have someone of Kate’s caliber and experience joining Team Harman,” said Harman, who was elected to her ninth term in Congress earlier this month. “She brings to the job a deep understanding of and strong ties to the 36th District, the perspective of a highly trained attorney and working mother, and a knack for linking my work in Washington with the interests of my constituents.”

In the mid 1990s, Anderson was a member of the Capitol Hill staff of Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Santa Monica). Earlier this year she ran as a candidate for the 53rd Assembly District seat that will be vacated by Assemblyman Ted Lieu, who is leaving due to term limits.

Anderson will be transitioning to Harman’s El Segundo office from the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson, where she convinced its managing partners to open the first child care center sponsored by a law firm west of the Mississippi.

“That was a product of all the skills I’d learned working for Rep. Waxman about how to get legislation passed,” said Anderson. “I’m also proud of my deep local roots through my work on the Mar Vista Community Council, and I’m immensely excited at the opportunity to marry those two strengths – an understanding of the legislative process and an understanding of the community – in working for Congresswoman Harman.”

In addition to serving as a member of her community’s local council, Anderson serves with the Hilltop Neighbors Association. She is a former board member for the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and a current member of the Los Angeles County Child Care Planning Committee.
