Auditions for Dracula; Centinela Adobe BBQ


Members and guests of the LAX Coastal Area Chamber of Commerce will salute outgoing President Thomas Flintoft and welcome new Chairman of the Board Kathi Woodley of Southwest Airlines at the chamber’s annual Installation Dinner.

The event, themed “Destination Installation: We’re Going Places,” will feature a travel theme and celebrate the beginning of Woodley’s term. She will guide the organization through June 30th, 2011, and her first duty as chair of the board will be riding in the chamber’s annual Fourth of July Parade.

Sponsored by Playa Vista, Los Angeles World Airports, Rainbow Acres, Southwest Airlines, H.B. Drollinger Co., and Mercury Air Group, the installation will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, June 18th at the Westin Los Angeles Airport Hotel, where Flintoft will present awards to chamber members who have made significant contributions during the 2009-2010 chamber year.

Honorees who will be recognized include: Outstanding Service, Glenn Sampert of the Westin Los Angeles Airport Hotel; Outstanding Small Business, Mishele Vieira of Away With Chaos; Hugo Francis Ambassador of the Year Award, Paul Major of State Farm Insurance; Rising Star Award, Robert Bates, CPA; Jim Bunch Spirit Award, Patricia Lyon of Westchester Watch Works; Chairman’s Award, David Voss of Voss, Silverman & Braybrooke, LLP; Helmsman Leadership Award, Sibyl Buchanan of Playa Vista; Sustainable Business Award, Loyola Marymount University; and Partners in Education Awards, Rotary Clubs of Westchester and Playa-Venice.

In addition, Honorary Mayor Diane Barretti will present the Honorary Mayor’s Award to Cindy Williams of C.W. Business Center.

The installing officer at this year’s event will be Colleen C. Barrett, president emeritus of Southwest Airlines. She will install the following individuals, who have been elected by the membership to serve on the LAX Coastal Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors:

At the installation, Woodley will formally announce her selection of the community’s honorary mayor for 2010-2011.


The Kentwood Players theater group will be holding auditions for its upcoming production of Dracula from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 10th and from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 11th, with callbacks from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Monday, July 12th at the Westchester Playhouse, 8301 Hindry Ave. in Westchester. The production is directed by Shawn K. Summerer and produced by Alison Mattiza and Elizabeth Bouton Summerer. Performance dates are September 10th to October 16th, on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Dramatized by Hamilton Deane and John L. Baldeston, loosely based on the novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula is a chilling and spooky tale about a bizarre illness fallen upon Lucy Seward, daughter to Dr. Seward, owner of an English Sanatorium in the early 1900s. Seward and Lucy’s fiancé, Jonathan Harker, call in the help of Professor Van Helsing, an expert in the macabre. Their search for answers leads them deeper and deeper into the terrors of the unknown and the unthinkable.

The director requests that you bring a headshot, resume, and an appointment calendar to the auditions. Advance appointments are not necessary.—Those auditioning will be asked to read from provided script sides.


The Historical Society of Centinela Valley will hold its 35th annual barbecue from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 6th at the Centinela Adobe Complex, 7634 Midfield Ave. in Westchester.

The event will include a barbecue lunch of steak or chicken, plus coleslaw, barbecue beans and homemade cake for a donation of $12.50 per person, or $5 for children under 6.

There will also be entertainment by Joey Dee and a classic car display courtesy of Classic Low Riders and Hot Rods, Old Timers of West L.A. Antique Cars and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
