The Kentwood Players will present Drive, a new play by Los Angeles playwright Emily Dodi about having the courage to take a chance or settling for what you’ve got, beginning Friday, July 10th and continuing through Saturday, August 15th at the Westchester Playhouse.
Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings and 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoons at the Westchester Playhouse, 8301 Hindry Ave., Westchester.
This serious and often hilarious play follows Grace on her 35th birthday as she realizes that “good enough” is a very dangerous thing, a Kentwood Players spokesperson said.—Longing for a more passionate life, Grace goes for a drive in the pouring rain as she contemplates risking everything for a dream that might never come true.
On her journey, Grace meets Queenie, the owner of a dive bar who is pondering those very same questions. Both women search for answers; Grace seeks out some resolve from her husband Arthur’s analytical and sustaining echo, while Queenie’s much-younger lover Honey is persuading her to sell the bar and leave for a tropical paradise — in Florida.
But the women are hindered and supported in this comic and thought-provoking tale by Jim, Queenie’s old faithful friend who hides his own reasons for wanting her to stay, and Sally, a barfly who surrendered to “good enough” long ago.
As the storm rages outside, a tempest builds inside the bar as both women face their demons and realize that maybe the only answer is what they’re willing to risk for a dream.
Drive is directed by Tony Gatto, who also helmed the play’s successful world premiere at The Company of Angels in 2004. Christine JoÎlle and Jordan Bland are the producers for Kentwood Players.
Featured in the Drive cast are Rebecca Avery, Drew Fitzsimmons, Scot Renfro, Jeanne Spain, Meredith M. Sweeney and Alec Tomkiw.
