The Water Awareness, Training, Education and Recreation (WATER) program of the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors is offering its popular aquatic sports camps for youths next month.
The program has three camps available for the spring ó surfing, ocean sports and beginning sailing.
The ocean sports camp for youths aged seven to 14 will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, April 13th through 17th, at the Venice Pier, located at the ocean end of Washington Boulevard in Venice.
The beginning sailing camp for youths aged 11 to 17 will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, April 6th through 10th, at the Marina del Rey Boathouse in Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way.
The WATER program, designed to raise awareness of ocean and beach safety through aquatic-related sports activities, is conducted by county lifeguards who have received special training in working with young people.
Youngsters must pass a swim test in order to qualify for the camps. All equipment is provided.
Fees range between $115 and $150 for the weeklong sessions. Financial aid is available based on family income and free transportation is also provided from inner city areas for young people whose parents are unable to drive them to the camp locations, county representatives said.
