The Soka Gakkai International-USA Culture of Peace Resource Center, 606 Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica, is scheduled to host a lecture on gang intervention in Los Angeles at 4 p.m. Saturday, December 15th.
The lecture will include Bill Martinez, program manager for the Youth and Gang Violence Intervention Specialist Training Program at California State University, Los Angeles, and Jerald Cavitt, chief executive officer of Unity Two Chapter Two, a nonprofit gang intervention organization that has successfully negotiated understanding between rival Los Angeles gangs.
For the last 30 years, the City of Los Angeles has relied upon a small cadre of former gang members and other “street soldiers” to help bring peace to the streets, according to Soka Gakkai.
Martinez and Cavitt will examine who some of the peacemakers were, their transformative experiences and who they have become as a result. The process by which they were able to create peace, despite serious obstacles, will also be discussed.
All lectures at Soka Gakkai are free and open to the public. A complete listing of lectures can be found at www.sgi-usa.org/.
