Assemblyman Ted W. Lieu has been reappointed by Assembly Speaker Karen Bass as the chair of the Assembly Rules Committee for the 2009-10 legislative session. Lieu represents some of the Argonaut readership area south of Santa Monica.

The Assembly Rules Committee assigns legislation to committees and the Assembly floor, allocates members’ offices, handles payroll, and oversees members’ budgets and personnel matters.

“I am honored to be reappointed as chair of the Assembly Rules Committee, and I would like to thank the Speaker for her continued confidence in me,” said Lieu. “We have a great deal of work to do this year, but our highest priority is to address our state’s enormous budget deficit, the sluggish economy, and a weak housing market. We must find bipartisan solutions that will reform our mortgage financing system and help Californians from losing their homes to foreclosure.

“I look forward to working with Speaker Bass and the rest of her leadership team to work on behalf of the constituents in my district and the State of California.”

Bass said the assemblyman has “been a dynamic leader in working to meet one of the state’s most pressing problems— the mortgage and foreclosure crisis.

“With solving our budget problems and recovering our economy tops on our agenda, I am very pleased that Chairman Lieu will be continuing as part of the Assembly’s leadership team,” Bass said.

The Rules Committee plays a role in the everyday business of the Assembly and provides a strong leadership position for its chair, Bass noted.

Among the other Assembly members who have been appointed as part of the speaker’s leadership team are Lori Salda“a as speaker pro tempore, Alberto Torrico as majority floor leader; Paul Krekorian as assistant majority floor leader, Fiona Ma as majority whip, Isadore Hall as assistant majority whip and John Perez as Democratic Caucus chair.
