The second annual Venice Spring Fling, featuring a full day of live music, art displays and dance performances, will take place from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12.

An offshoot of the successful Venice Beach Music Fest, the free Spring Fling event will be held on the Windward Plaza at the Venice Beach Boardwalk.

This year, rock musician Tracii Guns will return with his new band, League of Gentlemen. The band includes vocalist Scott Foster Harris and multi-instrumentalist Steve Preach (Zen Rizing), drummer Doni Gray (Burning Tree, L.A. Guns) and bassist Johnny Martin (The Road).

Also performing will be Barry “The Fish” Melton (Country Joe and The Fish), playing in a band with Michael Hinton (Mickey Hart, Joan Baez, Jerry Garcia, Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band, and Roky Erickson), Tony Saunders (Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band), and drummer Andy Kravitz (Taj Mahal, David Bromberg).

Melton, a veteran performer who played at Woodstock, is a longtime fan of Venice.

“Venice was the center of the counterculture in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, and it has maintained a continuing counterculture tradition over all the years of my lifetime. I am delighted to be playing the Spring Fling,” Melton said.

The music lineup also includes Street Smart (featuring boardwalk musicians), local favorites Fly N Lion, Candygram for Mongo, world beat funksters Delta Nove (celebrating their new release, Imaginary Conversations), Braw (featuring Norwood Fisher of Fishbone), and Looner. Local guitarists Michael Jost (Sugarbitch), Marc Blackbird (Champa 51), Stephanie Lallouz (Hunny Bunch), and Corty Byron will provide additional acoustic performances.

“Venice has always been a stopping point for great musicians and artists,” says festival producer Milton Rosenberg. “This year’s Venice Spring Fling showcases the best of music, art and dance.”

The accompanying art show features paintings, sculptures, and photography from local and international artists. Additionally, the art show features a contingent from San Diego’s Infusion Project.

ATS Bellydance and Drums, as well as Ya Harissa Bellydance Theater will also return this year to intersperse dance sets between musical performances on stage. Third Eye Tie Dye and Eclectic Hoops will be on display and for sale.
