The Argonaut has compiled a list of some planned local community events in celebration of Chanukah.

Promenade menorah lighting

A free Chanukah celebration and menorah lighting ceremony with community representatives will begin at sundown Friday, December 11th in the 1300 block of the Third Street Promenade, north of center court in Santa Monica.

The menorah lighting ceremony will be held every evening through Friday, December 18th.

Chanukah party at beach synagogue

The Pacific Jewish Center Shul on the Beach has scheduled its Open House Chanukah Party from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13th at the synagogue’s beachfront location at 505 Ocean Front Walk, Venice.

Along with dreidel games, chocolate gelt, latkes, blintzes and other traditional Chanukah foods and activities, there will be a moon bounce as well as a special program for children. Rabbi Eliyahu Fink will address adults and teens with a talk on “The Gift of Chanukah” and live music will also be featured at the event.

“We look forward to greeting our neighbors and spreading the light of Chanukah,” said Fink, Pacific Jewish Center’s religious leader.

“Chanukah is the one time where there is a special mitzvah (commandment) to publicize the greatness of the day. It is in this spirit that we invite the entire beach community to bask in the glow of Chanukah candles and share in their light.”

Festival at Howard Hughes Center

A Chanukah festival is planned at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 13th in the center court at the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center, 6081 Center Drive, Westchester.

The festival features The Jumbo Shrimp Circus with circus style shows and interactive


The event also includes dreidels, food such as hot latkes and chocolate gelt, a giant menorah, music and activities such as Chanukah crafts, decorating cookies and crafting menorahs.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Free Chanukah


A free Chanukah celebration including a potluck dinner, dancing, Jewish music, traditional Jewish games and lighting of the menorah is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13th at SHARE!, the Self-Help and Recovery Exchange, 5521 Grosvenor Blvd., Del Rey.
