Longtime Westchester resident Gwenyth Jones Cleary passed away Tuesday, October 30th, at her home in Carlsbad. She was 53.

Born and raised in the Westchester area of Los Angeles, Cleary was a 1972 graduate of Westchester High School and San Diego State University in 1978.

She worked as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines from 1979 until 2005. Her hobbies were traveling and gardening. An avid athlete, Cleary was a competitive swimmer and runner.

During her career with Delta, Cleary lived in Boston, New Orleans, Atlanta and finally the San Diego area, where she settled with her husband, Tom Cleary, of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

It was at her longtime home in Carlsbad where she developed her passion for gardening, winning many awards for her roses and her elaborate home flower garden. She was awarded the Honorary Master Gardener title as a valued member of the California Coastal Rose Society.

Cleary is survived by her husband Tom, parents Robert Jones and Betty Jones, stepmother Agnes Jones, brothers Kevin and Keith, sister Megan, stepsisters Kasa and Kris and grandchildren Alexandra and Jackson.

Both her family and an worldwide network of friends and associates that she touched throughout her life will remember her as a strong, independent woman who bravely fought a long, hard battle against lung cancer with a bright, inspiring outlook, according to friends.

A memorial service for Cleary is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 10th, at St. Michaels By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Carlsbad. Reception is scheduled to follow at Ede Hall.

A private burial will be held at Eternal Hills. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the California Coastal Rose Society at www.californiacoastalrose.com/.
