The Fireside at the Miles series in Santa Monica will continue with a performance by Los Angeles Metropolitan Opera members Friday, Jan. 28 and the Ruskin Group Theatre’s Best of the Café Plays Saturday, Jan. 29.

Fireside at the Miles features an eclectic line-up of music, storytelling, dance and drama at the historic Miles Memorial Playhouse, 1130 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica.

During the performance series, scheduled through Feb. 5, patrons are offered comfortable lounge seating beside the stone fireplace, organic coffees and teas, and pastries.

An Evening with the Los Angeles Metropolitan Opera is scheduled at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7:15 p.m. Jan. 28. The show will include famous arias and ensembles from Puccini, Verdi, Mozart, as well as operas including Lucia di Lammermoor, Carmen, Tosca, and Don Giovanni. Performers include bass player Bob Arce, baritones Mario Biscaldi and Gabriel Manro, sopranos Linda Jackson and Amanda McAllister, mezzo-soprano Marcella Pan and tenor James Salazar, accompanied by Maestra Galina Barskaya on piano.

The Los Angeles Metropolitan Opera’s latest production, a full staging of Puccini’s Tosca, was performed at the Miles Playhouse in October.

The Ruskin Group Theatre will present its Best of the Cafe Plays at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7:15 p.m. Jan. 29.

The show features a selection of favorite Cafe Plays from the series’ seven-year history. Every short Cafe Play takes 10 hours to create, while playwrights write and actors and directors rehearse in one action-packed day, according to Ruskin Group Theatre. It’s mandated that each takes place in a cafe but otherwise anything can happen.

Performance tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students, seniors and youth 17 or under. For reservations, (310) 458-8634 or All events are suitable for adults and mature teens, and most are also appropriate for children.
