Santa Monica police arrested a 49-year-old man who allegedly attempted to make an explosive device inside his camper at the beach parking lot north of the Santa Monica Pier Friday, April 14th.

Santa Monica police officers on patrol at the 1550 beach parking lot at 4:45 p.m. were approached by a woman who alleged that she was physically assaulted by her boyfriend, who was inside their camper.

The woman also told police that her boyfriend, identified as Donald Joseph Brower, of Topanga, was allegedly in the process of making an explosive device, Santa Monica police Lt. Frank Fabrega said.

The suspect got out of the camper a short time later and was taken into custody.

Due to the information received about a possible explosive device inside the camper, police contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad.

Police cleared a small portion of the parking lot during the investigation.

Bomb squad deputies entered the camper, where they located the alleged destructive device and “made it safe,” Fabrega said.

Brower was arrested and booked in Santa Monica Jail for possession of an explosive device, domestic violence and false imprisonment, police said.

His bail was set at $500,000.
