Santa Monica police are seeking potential witnesses to an assault by the beach early this month that left a man in critical condition.
Police were called at 8:54 p.m. Sept. 4 to the 2600 block of the beach, in between the bicycle path and the beach restrooms, where witnesses reported seeing a man lying unconscious on the ground, while a person stood over the man and allegedly removed his property, Sgt. Richard Lewis said.
When officers arrived at the scene they found a man who appeared to have been assaulted about the head and face with an unknown hard object, Lewis said.
The victim, who was bleeding profusely and was unconscious, was taken to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition, Lewis said.
After speaking with one witness, who observed part of the incident, officers detained two possible suspects in connection with the assault and robbery of the man, Lewis said.
Investigators have learned that at the time of the assault, there were several people in the general area who may have seen the attack and are encouraging any additional witnesses to come forward.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Det. Larios at (310) 458-8937, Sgt. Rutan at (310) 458-8959, or the Santa Monica Police Department (24 hours) at (310) 458-8495.
