A 21-year-old Culver City man was killed in an apparent gang-related drive-by shooting at a parking lot on Nielson Way near Main Street in Santa Monica early Saturday, July 7th, police said.
Santa Monica police said they are looking for three or four Hispanic male suspects wanted in connection with the fatal shooting.
Police were called to a parking lot in the 2800 block of Nielson Way at 1:40 a.m. regarding a report of shots fired.
Witnesses at the scene told the officers that two groups of Hispanic males had been involved in an argument in which they had allegedly exchanged gang signs, Santa Monica police Lt. Alex Padilla said.
“It appears that the argument started in one of the local bars on Main Street and led out to the street and into the parking lot,” Padilla said.
After the argument the two groups went their separate ways, with the group of suspects getting into a silver or blue four-door vehicle, he said.
As the suspects’ vehicle drove northbound on Nielson Way and past the other group, several shots were fired from a small-caliber handgun, striking the victim in the upper torso as he was walking with his friends, Padilla said.
No one else was injured.
The victim, identified as David Silva, was taken by his friends to UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, Padilla said.
The suspects in the shooting are described only as Hispanic males.
Police are unsure what the argument between the two groups was about but believe the shooting was gang related, Padilla said.
The investigation is ongoing and police said they are still trying to confirm which gangs were involved.
