A 49-year-old man who allegedly stole a motorcycle from a convenience store parking lot in Santa Monica was killed when he crashed into an SUV at Fourth Street and Colorado Avenue early Thursday, May 31st, Santa Monica police said.
The man, identified as Kevin Keith Barkes of Monterey Park, was riding southbound on Fourth Street on the motorcycle and had reportedly been speeding when he drove through a red light and collided with a Volkswagen Touareg traveling westbound on Colorado Avenue at 5:42 a.m., Santa Monica police Lt. Alex Padilla said.
Barkes was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 24-year-old female driver of the Volkswagen was taken to the Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, where she was treated for minor injuries and released.
The 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle Barkes was driving had just been reported stolen from the parking lot at the 7-Eleven store in the 1600 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, Padilla said.
Barkes had apparently used a set of locks to “punch the ignition” and start the motorcycle, Padilla alleged.
Witnesses reported seeing the motorcycle driving at high rates of speed in the area and going through red lights prior to the accident, Padilla said.
A police officer driving northbound on Fourth Street saw the motorcycle as it passed him, but by the time the officer turned around, the vehicle had broadsided the SUV at the intersection, Padilla said.
Police said further investigation revealed that Barkes was on parole with an outstanding felony warrant and had prior arrests for grand theft auto, receiving stolen property and narcotic violations.
