Mar Vista is one of seven neighborhood councils that will receive the inaugural EmpowerLA Award from the Los Angeles Board of Neighborhood Commissioners Friday, April 26 at Los Angeles City Hall.
The Mar Vista Community Council’s Green Committee was selected for the award for its annual “Green Garden Showcase,” which engages the community in the sustainable lifestyle by putting the spotlight on drought-tolerant and food producing gardens with a popular tour.
The garden showcase, which was held April 20, features Mar Vista residences that have incorporated sustainable living by creating new landscapes with sustainable plants and edible gardens, using devices to capture storm water runoff as well as solar panels, among other green practices.
The Board of Neighborhood Commissioners is a subset of the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, a city agency that oversees the city’s 95 local councils.
