The conference is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Friday with a dinner and welcoming reception, followed by live performances from local dance company Contra-tiempo and Los Angeles-based youth organization The Hazze Hip-Hop Culture Dream Center.

The program Saturday, June 23rd, is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., with registration and workshops, and end at 5:30 p.m. with an open mic hosted by HBO’s Def Poet Pocho Joe.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Choices.”

Family center officials said the event aims to show youths that it is important that they learn to approach everything with a critical eye and understand that they have “choices” as well when it comes to what they consume.

The Mar Vista Family Center is a nationally recognized program aimed to create positive changes through dozens of community programs, including By Youth for Youth, which promotes individual and social responsibility among youths.
