Latino celebrities joined over 100 teens at the Mar Vista Family Center in Del Rey for its 10th annual “By Youth for Youth” leadership conference Oct. 1 and 2.
The goal of the event was to create a safe space where teenagers can connect and discuss everyday issues that they may face, said a family center spokeswoman.
“I cannot be more proud of the youth who have worked endlessly to coordinate this conference. It is through their desire to reach out to their peers that this event was a success,” said Mar Vista Family Center Youth Program Director Blanca Diaz. “The level of participation and enthusiasm seen in each of the teens’ faces makes my job worth every minute.”
Actress Belita Moreno (George Lopez, Diary of a Wimpy Kid) addressed the teens on the first day of the conference. She sought to inspire them to join together for a positive change through the conference’s theme, “None of us are as strong as all of us.” The youth spent the rest of the day networking with their peers, and later that evening danced to the songs of the youth Latin band, La Chamba.
The following day, workshops that featured community building to increase youth advocacy were held, along with traditional Mexican folklorico, college preparation discussions and poetry from Los Angeles historian Mike the Poet.
Radio DJ Raq-C from Latino 96.3’s morning show and singer-songwriter Lala Romero were the Oct. 2 guest speakers.
