Longtime Marina del Rey resident Marcia Sarah McPhee died peacefully March 4 at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica with her family by her side. She was 83.
McPhee was born May 3, 1927 to John and Ann Lazar in Avalon on Catalina Island. She graduated from Avalon High School in 1944 and earned a bachelor’s degree from UCLA.
After a first marriage to Raymond M. Ross, she married Chuck McPhee on Aug. 19, 1961. The couple made Marina del Rey their home for most of the past 45 years.
On July 4, 1965, Marcia and Chuck, as co-owners, opened Donkin’s Inn, a popular restaurant in the Marina. In the mid 1970s, McPhee joined the Del Rey Shores Apartments, where she became manager and executive assistant to developer Jerry Epstein, a position from which she retired at the age of 80.
McPhee enjoyed traveling, especially to Twin Falls, ID and Catalina Island to visit extended family, as well as spending time in Rancho Valencia. She loved the arts, movies, reading, music and cooking, an activity she shared with family and friends.
After her retirement, she enjoyed her daily walks with the family dog, Bella.
McPhee is survived by her husband Chuck; daughter Lorrie M. Ross; son Charlie McPhee and wife Tina; three grandchildren, Brandon R. Hafetz, Kate McPhee and Will McPhee; and sister Kayla Lawrence.
A memorial service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday, March 18 at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City.
