Marina Aquatic Center Junior Rowing captured the Women’s Junior 8 at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in Newport Beach Sunday, November 4th.

Winning the event for the first time, Marina Aquatic Center defeated Long Beach Junior Crew and Maritime Rowing Club of Norwalk, Connecticut, the defending gold and silver medalists from the 2007 USRowing Youth National Championships.

“Obviously, it’s a thrill anytime you can win a race against this caliber of competition,” head coach Zohar Abramovitz said. “I’m very happy for our young women and just hope they use this as motivation to train hard over the winter so they can put themselves in a position to be part of the conversation in the big sprint races this spring.”

The gold medal Marina Aquatic Center Junior Women’s crew included coxswain Tess Hartigan, Celeste Wise in stroke position, followed by Lindsay Pollock, Katie O’Hanlon, Anna Rasmussen, Gaby Zarate-de Macedo, Ariana Chehrazi, Sarah Thompson, and Amber Heron in the bow.

The varsity girls posted a time of 17:19 over the winding 4,500-meter course around Lido Island in Newport Harbor, edging out Maritime by two seconds, and fourth-place finisher Long Beach by 20 seconds.

Finishing third in the event with a time of 17:32, was the crew from the Newport Aquatic Center, the event’s host.
