Junior Rowing Team earns silver in Nationals

Four young women from the Marina Aquatic Center (MAC) Junior Rowing team earned silver medals in the quadruple sculls at the 2008 USRowing Youth National Championships June 15th.

Over 1,300 teenage rowers competed for national titles in 16 events at Harsha Lake, east of Cincinnati.

The silver medal-winning boat team from Marina Aquatic Center was comprised of Lindsay Pollock in stroke position, followed by Ariana Chehrazi, Anna Rasmussen, and Katie O’Hanlon, steering the boat from the bow.

The Marina Aquatic Center quartet finished with a time of 7:12.77, slightly over six seconds behind the leaders, from Long Beach Junior Crew, and just ahead of the third-place finishers from Connecticut’s New Canaan High School in what was described as a “nail-biting” finish.

Boats must qualify each year for a Youth National Championship bid by earning a first, second or third-place finish in one of ten recognized Youth National Championship regional events that are held around the country prior to Nationals.

All four Marina team silver medallists had previously been with the California Yacht Club to Nationals, where Rasmussen and O’Hanlon had finished as high as fifth in both the double and single events.

The Rasmussen-O’Hanlon duo then went on to take gold in the double at the USRowing Club National Championships last July.

On the strength of their performance in Cincinnati, the Marina athletes were invited by USRowing, the sport’s governing body in the U.S., to represent the country at the Pan-American Youth Championships (CanAmMex) next month in Oklahoma City.

All four girls plan to row at the collegiate level this fall, with Pollock headed to UCLA, Chehrazi to Massachusetts Institue of Technology, Rasmussen to Stanford and O’Hanlon to Harvard.

“Rowing definitely gives our athletes a leg-up in the college recruitment process,” said head coach Zohar Abramovitz, “but at MAC, we focus on much more.

“Our 80-member Junior Rowing program affords teens the discipline, teamwork and sense of pride that will serve them well throughout their lives.”

The Marina Aquatic Center, at 14001 Fiji Way in Marina del Rey, is hosting a “Bring a Friend to Row” day Saturday, September 6th, for interested teens ages 13 to 18.
