As the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors is set to begin dredging operations in the north entrance of the Marina this month, the American flag that usually flies from the breakwater and is normally illuminated each evening is not being displayed because the power line that provides the illumination is broken, and no American flag is permitted by the United States Government to fly at night without being illuminated.
Wave and tide conditions at the breakwater make it difficult and dangerous for employees to raise and lower the flag at sunrise and sunset each day.
The Department of Beaches and Harbors is in the process of obtaining a new power cable for the flag, which will be installed from the north jetty to the breakwater.
However, the upcoming dredging operation will make it impossible to connect this new cable to the flag until the dredging operation ends.
Department officials estimate that the dredging project will be completed by March 15th, and shortly thereafter the flag will fly again from the breakwater, illuminated each evening.
