The death of a Marina City Club man who fell five stories from a balcony at the club’s East Tower early Thursday, June 14th, has been classified as a suicide, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

The victim has been identified as John Carlton Ward, 45. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to 4333 Admiralty Way in Marina del Rey at approximately 2:49 a.m. after witnesses discovered the body near the entrance to the luxury condominium complex. Preliminary reports suggested that Ward had died accidentally, said Sgt. Hiram Komoto of the Marina Sheriff’s Station.

“He basically fell over the railing and struck the ground,” said the sergeant.

Komoto said that Ward was at the home of another resident in the high-rise when he fell from the balcony, and he alleged that Ward had been drinking prior to the fall.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit was assigned to investigate the case, as it does whenever someone dies.
