Seventeen boats arrived at the start line to enjoy another wonderful day on the water for the first event of the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club (SMWYC) Barbecue Race series Sunday, June 5th.
The race was sailed in memory of Allan Freedman, who had been an avid competitor in this event and who recently passed away.
Five boats competed in the 30-foot-plus class and 12 boats followed in the less-than-30-feet class.
The course was south to the El Segundo buoy and back, finishing in front of the SMWYC clubhouse — a distance of 7.3 nautical miles.
This series was designed for the novice sailor who is just beginning to learn about race rules and also for the cruiser who just needs an excuse to go sailing.
The race was capped off with trophy presentation at the weekly barbecue at the club.
