Marina del Rey resident Alexander Monsivaiz, a senior at the Army and Navy Academy in north San Diego County, has won the “Warrior Pride Award” in varsity cross country for his participation during the fall 2011 season.

The cadet was honored Jan. 11 at the academy’s annual Fall Athletic Awards banquet.

The 101-year-old academy has a wide ranging athletic program that includes football, cross country, water polo, surfing, soccer, wrestling, roller hockey, baseball, golf, swimming, tennis, track, lacrosse and martial arts.

Founded in 1910, the Army and Navy Academy is a private nonprofit institution that provides an academically robust, character-based education for young men in grades 7 through 12, an academy spokesperson says.

It is the only private boarding school in San Diego County and the only military academy for high school-age students in California and surrounding states, according to the academy.
