Marina del Rey might be without fireworks this Fourth of July, but local mariners are planning another type of celebration with the Fourth of July Dinghy Parade.
The parade will be held in the main channel of the Marina adjacent to Burton Chace Park, starting at 2 p.m.
The event is open to any dinghy owners or inflatable dinghies, and is intended to pay tribute to United States military personnel who have served and are currently serving their country, said parade organizer Lowell Safier. Spectators are welcome.
The parade has received support from the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s Departments, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Marina del Rey Holiday Boat Parade and Marina del Rey yacht clubs, said Safier, a longtime Marina resident.
Admission is free for skippers of all seaworthy dinghies and participants are encouraged to decorate in red, white and blue in the theme of their choice.
Recommended viewing spots are at Burton Chace Park and Fisherman’s Village.
