Entry forms are now available for the Marina del Rey Anglers 32nd Annual Halibut Derby scheduled Saturday and Sunday, April 1st and 2nd.
The forms are available on the Internet at www.halibutderby.com, or by e-mail by calling (310) 821-7262.
The Marina del Rey Halibut Derby is the oldest and largest fishing tournament in Southern California.
Attendance for the 2006 halibut derby is projected to be over 1,000.
“This year’s halibut extravaganza promises to be bigger and better than all previous events,” Marina del Rey Anglers Derby chairman Bob Kissling said. “It just keeps getting bigger and better every year.”
Entry fees are $75 for adults and $35 for youths under 16 years. The fees include a deluxe barbecue dinner and a door prize raffle ticket for a chance to win one of hundreds of prizes at an awards event in which over $60,000 worth of prizes will be distributed.
Additional raffle tickets will be on sale.
All proceeds from entry fees go to support the Marina del Rey Anglers’ Youth Fishing Program and the club’s Ocean Resources Enhancement Program, which raises and releases juvenile white seabass to help the species reestablish itself as a major Southern California fishery.
“We want each participant to know and be proud that your entry fees helped take over 1,100 at-risk kids fishing last year and funded our white seabass program, which released over 2,800 fish in 2005 and over 70,000 fish since inception [of the program],” Marina del Rey Anglers president Ken Raymond said.
Prizes for the 2006 derby will include fishing trips to the East Cape, Mazatl·n, Alaska and other resorts, fishing trips on Southern California sports boats, top quality rods, reels and other tackle.
One lucky angler could receive a new Toyota Tundra truck, sales tax and license included, for the heaviest halibut over 53 pounds, compliments of Marina del Rey Toyota. New trucks have been awarded twice in the previous four years.
Last year over 800 halibut derby anglers competed for over $60,000 of prizes and raffle items.
John Romanak, a member of the Marina del Rey Anglers, won the grand prize last year, which was a trip to Baja California.
The halibut derby will also include a team competition. Teams may be comprised of two to four anglers, and teams do not have to fish from the same boat.
To enter the team competition, add $25 per individual.
