Marina del Rey resident Miriam Hamrell, the founding rabbi of Ahavat Torah Congregation in West Los Angeles, has been recognized for her service by Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavksy.
Hamrell is described by the congregation as the first and only Israeli-born and-raised woman to head an American Jewish congregation for the past 10 years.
She has served in the Israeli Defense forces and also counsels and teaches female inmates with her work at prisons. According to the congregation, she is a leading personality, spokesperson and ethicist for the local Jewish community.
During a gala May 4 in Los Angeles, Yaroslavsky presented Hamrell with a proclamation honoring her for “ten years of service as a motivational leader, teacher and founder of Ahavat Torah synagogue.”

As a member of Ahavat Torah I would like people to know that Rabbi Miriam is a brilliant teacher and spiritual leader. I never belonged to a synagogue until I found Rabbi Miriam’s congregation. Rabbi Miriam and her congregation are such a caring and compassionate community.
After attending the high holy days at Ahavat Torah we knew we had come home. We’d been searching for a more meaningful synagogue experience for many years. Rabbi Miriam Hamrell sets the tone…spiritual, compassionate, learned. We are a small group with more heart than any I have belonged to before. My husband and I were immediately welcomed, Sarah and Bob B.
Rabbi Miriam is all heart, a heart that is large enough to enfold all who come within her orbit. I am grateful to be privileged to be one of them. She has boundless loving energy that is expended way beyond her normal rabbinical duties. Her total dedication and selfless service have created a community that reflects her love and provides a space where all who enter feel welcome and at home.

Rabbi Miriam is a diamond. She is pure love and light. She welcomes all into her spiritual sanctuary.
