Santa Monica College Media and Reprographic Services Manager Al DeSalles has been named the college’s 2011 Manager of the Year.
DeSalles, a 26-year veteran whom college officials say has been instrumental in establishing SMC as a leader in the use of technology campuswide, was presented with the award at SMC’s annual Recognition Program June 15.
“Al DeSalles is an exemplary manager who has brought the latest in technology into the classroom and other areas throughout the college,” SMC President Chui L. Tsang said. “In a quiet and highly professional manner, Al has created a technology savvy culture at the college and he gets users excited about technology’s incredible potential.”
An El Segundo resident, DeSalles oversees a staff of 11 in Media and Reprographic Services. Beginning his SMC career as an instructional media assistant in 1985, he rose through the ranks to his current position, which he has held since 1996.
His most recent major accomplishment was the concept design and implementation of the SMC Digital Learning Studio, a “classroom of the future” that opened last fall and uses high-definition video, SMART interactive whiteboards, Response clickers, iPads and mobile furniture to engage students in new ways, college officials noted.
Among his other accomplishments are the introduction of iPods, iPads, and iTunes to teaching and learning tool supplements, as well as a standardized design for more than 150 smart-enabled classrooms at SMC, officials said.
“I feel fantastic,” DeSalles said. “It’s an honor and privilege to receive an award like this.”
