The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District board of education appointed Michael Matthews as interim superintendent Thursday, February 23rd.
Last week, superintendent John Deasy announced that he was leaving the school district in May to accept the top position at Prince George’s County School District in Maryland.
After 11 years as principal of Malibu High School, Matthews joined the district’s senior management team last year as an assistant superintendent and chief of staff.
Matthews assumed day-to-day operations of the district on Monday, February 27th, and officially assumes the interim position Friday, March 3rd. He will continue to receive his assistant superintendent salary.
“With the pending departure of Dr. Deasy, the direction of the district will stay the same and the work will continue without interruption,” said school board president Julia Brownley.
