Marina Del Rey Middle School in Del Rey is one of hundreds of schools nationwide that have been awarded $60,000 in classroom supplies due to their use of a supply “wish list” website.
Marina Middle School received iPads, school supplies and school supply gift cards to kick off the 2012-13 school year for its implementation of the TeacherLists.com program at the school.
TeacherLists.com, a School Family Media, Inc. site, allows all teachers to easily load and update their classroom’s must-have supply lists, as well as their wish lists. Parents can then access the site online, keeping them up to date on exactly what their children need for the classroom, as well as what teachers hope to receive to create their quintessential learning environment.
A TeacherLists.com spokesperson said the site was created not only to help connect teachers and parents, but to also help alleviate out-of-pocket spending by teachers. According to a recent survey by Bounty, national sponsor of TeacherLists.com, teachers spend on average $486 out of their own pockets to purchase much needed supplies for their classrooms.
“The fact that 89 percent of teachers send out a supply list at some point during the year, but are still spending nearly $500 out of their own pockets led us to create a tool to simplify the process and make it easier for parents to contribute to their kids’ classrooms,” said Tim Sullivan, School Family Media president.
