Joe’s Restaurant on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice will kick off a monthly jazz series Friday, Feb. 3 that will coincide with the First Friday activities on the eclectic boulevard.
Mohr Music will launch the First Fridays Jazz Series at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at Joe’s, 1023 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice. The series will feature instrumental and vocal artists, internationally recognized artists as well as local talent, signed and unsigned, playing on the heated patio.
The debut event will feature Venice-based keys player John Beasley, along with virtuosic vocalist Dwight Trible, celebrating the release of their new album Duality. The rhythm section will include Trevor Ware on bass and Dexter Story on drums.
In 2010, the improvisational musicians recorded three duet concerts at REDCAT, Jazz Bakery Concerts at Boston Court and a private concert at Mimi’s Jazz Salon. Selected tracks from the live recordings are presented in Duality, a live duet album with Beasley and Trible re-imagining, re-interpreting and re-inventing eight jazz standards.
In addition to performing with his group, The Dwight Trible Ensemble, Trible is the vocalist with the Pharoah Sanders Quartet and the vocal director for the Horace Tapscott Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra.
The artists will play three or four sets for the Feb. 3 performance. There is no cover charge for the music, but dinner orders are required for table seating. Joe’s will give a complimentary glass of wine with dinner, for 6 to 7 p.m. reservations.
