Peter Shaffer’s classic play Equus will be performed at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre in Santa Monica beginning Saturday, Sept. 17 through Oct. 9.

Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre, 2627 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. A special benefit performance for Return to Freedom, American Wild Horse Sanctuary is scheduled at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.

Written more than 30 years ago, Equus tells of a psychiatrist who attempts to treat a young man who has a pathological fascination with horses. The play is full of metaphors for the struggle between the primitive and modern, the natural vs. man-made and ongoing need for the human race to harness and control that which it cannot understand or become, a playhouse spokesperson said.

The play is directed by Madeleine Dahm, who received her training at the acclaimed Old Vic Theatre and Royal Court Theatre in London in the 1980s. Dahm spent 20 years performing in international theatre and modern dance, including works at the Royal Sadlers Wells Theatre, Covent Garden Opera House and The National Theatre.

The creative team includes Neda De Mayo, horse advisor, Bosco Flanagan (lighting designer), Thomas Brown (set designer), Ronda Dynice Brooks (costume designer), Kimerlee Curyl (photography) and Kristy Pace (producer).

The cast of Equus features Andrew Villarreal, Derek Long, Deborah Gold, Ron Edwards, Michael Heimos, Gwyneth Shanks, Knight Davison, Maria Dalbotten, Ryan Haberfeld, Loren Fenton and Margot Rose.

Tickets are $18 for reserved seats or $15 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased online at, or by calling (310) 828-7519.
