A 22-year-old motorcyclist who was critically injured in a collision with an SUV in Santa Monica late last month has died, police said.

Los Angeles resident Frank Gauthier suffered severe head and body trauma in the Feb. 24 accident and was transported to a local trauma center, where he succumbed to his injuries March 12, Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis said.

The Santa Monica Police Department is continuing to investigate the collision. At the time of the incident, several witnesses alleged to police that Gauthier was racing another motorcycle rider prior to the crash, Lewis said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the two motorcycles were travelling at a high rate of speed while splitting traffic westbound on Pico Boulevard from Cloverfield Boulevard, Lewis said. As the two motorcycles approached the intersection of Pico and 20th Street, a 2005 Ford Expedition driven by a 41-year-old woman, began making a left turn onto 20th Street from eastbound Pico, he said.

The riders were unable to stop or maneuver around the vehicle apparently due to the speed they were traveling, and Gauthier struck the rear passenger side of the Expedition while the other rider laid his motorcycle down on the roadway to avoid a collision, Lewis said.
