The 75th anniversary of Muscle Beach will be celebrated Saturday, July 4th at the 2009 Mr. and Ms. Muscle Beach Bodybuilding, Figure, and Bikini Competition at the Venice Beach Recreation Center, 1800 Ocean Front Walk.

Diamond jubilee festivities for Muscle Beach will include the induction of Relna Brewer McRae, one of four pioneers who established Muscle Beach in Santa Monica in 1934, into the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame. The 89-year-old McRae is scheduled to attend. Also being enshrined is Bernie Ersnt, star of the television show “Body Buddies.”

The traditional Independence Day bodybuilding event, which also marks the nation’s 233rd birthday, draws a contingent of competitors from multiple continents and is open to all amateur athletes.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., with prejudging starting at 10 a.m. At 1 p.m., there will be a parade of athletes and the presentation of colors by a U.S. Army color guard, followed by the competition finals, which will continue until about 5 p.m.

The entry fee is $80 per participant, but admission is free for spectators. There will be onsite exhibits from companies in the health and fitness industry, along with educational materials, and giveaways.

The anniversary event is being presented by Joe Wheatley Productions, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
