Tom Donner, Santa Monica College executive vice president of business and administration, has been named national outstanding chief business officer of the year by the Community College Business Officers Organization.

Donner has also been named acting president of Santa Monica College by college trustees, effective with the departure of college president Piedad Robertson, at the end of next month.

The award comes less than a month after Donner was named the top business officer in the organization’s Region Two, which includes all of California.

Donner was selected as the national winner from 17 regional winners Wednesday, November 17th, at the organization’s annual conference in Charleston, South Carolina.

The organization represents community college business officers in the U.S. and Canada.

Donner has been the chief business officer at Santa Monica College since 1976.

He charted the college fiscal plan through the aftermath of Proposition 13 tax reform and helped develop a strong international student recruitment program to supplement state funding, college officials said.

He also led the team that rebuilt facilities damaged by the 1994 Northridge earthquake and negotiated agreements that established college satellite sites throughout Santa Monica.

Donner has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance and business administration from California State University Long Beach and a Doctor Juris from Southwestern University.

He is an active member of the California State Bar Association.
