LAX Coastal Area Chamber installation dinner;YMCA yard sale; LAPD Boosters “Taste of Italy” dinner

In the midst of the city’s budget crisis, neighborhood councils throughout Los Angeles have banded together and staved off an attempt to slash their annual budgets from $50,000 to $11,500 — for now.

The recently approved budget proposal has each neighborhood council budget falling ten percent to $45,000 a year, and a new ordinance approved by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the City Council clears the way for neighborhood councils to more freely dole out their money to community organizations.

Previous restrictions on the use of neighborhood council funds meant that the councils could only make payments directly to approved vendors and could not contribute directly to nonprofit organizations. The new ordinance allows neighborhood councils to form partnerships and give funds directly to most 501(c)3 organizations, except religious organizations and private schools.

The Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa is currently soliciting applicants for community grants under this new ordinance.

Nonprofit organizations and public schools must complete an application for a Neighborhood Purposes Grant and submit it to the neighborhood council. An electronic version of the application is available on the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment’s (DONE) Web site at

The neighborhood council will evaluate all grant applications in a public meeting and decide whether to approve or disapprove the proposed grant. If the application is approved, it will be forwarded to DONE, which will review the application for compliance with city rules and process a check to the grant recipient.


On Friday, June 19th, the LAX Coastal Area Chamber of Commerce will install the new chairman of the board, Tom Flintoft, at its annual Installation Dinner. The event will recognize outgoing chairman Jim Ferro and his 2008-2009 board of directors. In addition, Flintoft’s 2009-2010 board will be sworn in.

The event will be held at the Marina del Rey Marriott Hotel, 4100 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey. The reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

This year the theme will focus on “Snapshots of Success,” a review of the successes achieved by the chamber in the communities in which it serves including Westchester, Marina del Rey, Playa Vista and Playa del Rey.

The event will also feature the graduation of the 2008-2009 class of Future Leaders, the announcement of the 2009-2010 honorary mayor and presentation of a variety of chamber awards.

Tickets are $100 per person. Platinum Sponsorships are available for $1,500 and include premium seating for ten and a full-page program advertisement. Gold Sponsorships are available for $1,250 and include preferred seating for ten and a half-page program advertisement. Silver Sponsorships are available for $1,000 and include preferred seating for ten.

The Westchester Y’s Men’s and Women’s Service Club will hold a yard sale from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6th at the YMCA Annex at 8030 Alverstone Ave., in Westchester.

The sale will include a wide variety of household treasures at reasonable prices, and all proceeds will go to programs at the Westchester Family YMCA.

The club is also looking for donations of items for the sale. Those interested in donating items can deliver them to the YMCA annex from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 4th and Friday, June 5th. Especially sought are electronics, appliances, tools, sports equipment, clothing, toys and other marketable items.

Donors should be aware that large or heavy items that do not sell must be picked up at the end of the sale on Saturday, June 6th. Appropriate donated items are tax deductible.


The Los Angeles Police Department Pacific Area Booster Association will hold “A Taste of Italy” dinner — complete with karaoke — from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 12th at the Westchester Elks Lodge, 8025 W. Manchester Ave., in Playa del Rey.

Proceeds will go to benefit the Pacific Area DAPs and Explorer programs.

The dinner will include antipasto, garlic bread, Caesar salad, lasagna, dessert, coffee and iced tea or lemonade as well as a no-host bar.

Tickets are $20 per person and $10 for children ten and under.

The event, sponsored by Playa Vista, Rainbow Acres, Gateway to L.A., and Tompkins Square Bar and Grill, will also include a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing.
