The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education has announced the appointment of three new school administrators.

The board voted June 7 to approve the appointment of Dr. Mark Kelly as the new director of student services, Shirley Compton as the new principal of Grant Elementary School, and Dr. Pamela Herkner-Chasse as the new principal of Juan Cabrillo Elementary School in Malibu.

The appointments precede the retirements of Chief Academic Office Dr. Sally Chou, Director of Student Services Marolyn Freedman, Grant Elementary Principal Alan Friedenberg, and Juan Cabrillo Elementary Principal Barry Yates at the end of June.

“I would like to wish a happy retirement to Dr. Chou, Ms. Freedman, Mr. Friedenberg, and Mr. Yates and thank them for their years of service and dedication to our district,” Superintendent Sandra Lyon said. “I congratulate Dr. Kelly, Ms. Compton, and Dr. Herkner-Chasse on their appointments.”

Kelly most recently served as principal of Malibu Middle/High School since 2004 and previously served as assistant principal and co-principal at Santa Monica High School.

Compton was appointed the assistant principal of Grant Elementary in July 2011. Before joining the Grant team, she served as the assistant principal of John Adams Middle School for four years. Prior to that, Compton taught seventh and eighth grade social studies at John Adams and was also a sixth grade teacher at an elementary school for three years.

Herkner-Chasse comes to the district from the Conejo Valley Unified School District, where she has served as the principal of Ladera Elementary School for the past four years.
