In high school boys basketball games:
For the second consecutive year, the Westchester High School Comets are champions of their own tournament, the Westchester Tip-Off Classic.
The Comets captured the Tip-Off Classic title with a 60-55 victory over Taft High School of Woodland Hills Saturday, December 9th.
With the victory, Westchester (4-0), the number-three ranked team in the Southland by the Los Angeles Times, overcame its first big test of the season in seventh-ranked Taft (3-1).
The Comets opened the new season in their first game of the Tip-Off Classic, a 78-70 victory over Sylmar High School December 6th.
After picking up victories over Galena High School of Reno, Nevada and Leuzinger High School in the next two rounds, Westchester set up the anticipated match-up with Taft in the championship game.
The Comets fell behind 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and went into halftime trailing 28-25, but they added 19 points in the third quarter, including four three-pointers, to take a six-point lead into the final quarter.
Taft managed to trim the Comet lead to three points with more than a minute remaining in the game, but Westchester was able to hang on for the tournament championship by scoring key late free throws.
Junior Jarred Dubois led the Comets with 15 points and Oscar Bellfield was the other double-digit scorer with ten points.
Dwayne Polee contributed seven points and Jesse Griffin, Dominique O’Connor and Cordell Hadnot each finished with six points for Westchester.
The Venice High School Gondoliers lost 64-57 to host San Fernando High School in a non-league game Monday, December 11th.
The Gondos (1-4) outscored San Fernando 16-11 in the second quarter, but trailed 32-26 at halftime.
Venice will next play View Park Prep at 4 p.m. Thursday, December 14th.
The St. Bernard High School Vikings defeated Lynwood High School 74-59 in the St. John Bosco Tournament Monday, December 11th.
The Vikings (5-1) have earned back-to-back victories after suffering their first loss of the season in a 55-52 defeat to Price High School Friday, December 8th.
After scoring 22 points in the second quarter, St. Bernard went into halftime with a 38-30 lead that it never gave up.
Senior forward Jourdan Sweeney led the Vikings with 19 points and ten rebounds. Kenny Jones was the other double-digit scorer with 12 points and Ryan Simpson added nine points.
St. Bernard will next play against King-Drew at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 14th.
The St. Monica High School Mariners were defeated 58-38 by St. Anthony High School of Long Beach in the St. Anthony Tournament Saturday, December 9th.
The Mariners (5-3) were held to just four points in the first quarter and trailed 35-17 at halftime.
Junior guard Jonathon Azer and senior guard Bryce Hamaguchi led the Mariners with nine points each in the game.
Junior center Patrick Russell added seven points and three rebounds for St. Monica, which will next host Golden Valley High of Santa Clarita at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 14th.
The Santa Monica High School Vikings won 64-51 over Bishop Montgomery High School in a non-league game Friday, December 8th.
After losing to Mayfair High in their second game of the season, the Vikings (7-1) have now picked up six consecutive victories.
Santa Monica will next play against Crawford High at 7:30 p.m. Friday, December 15th.
In high school girls basketball games:
The Westchester High School Comets earned a 54-44 victory over Morningside High School in a non-league game Monday, December 11th.
The Comets (4-5) outscored Morningside 19-9 in the first quarter and held a 35-16 lead by halftime.
Junior Olivia Reese led the Comets with 16 points and senior Malika Jones added 12 points and five rebounds in the game.
The St. Monica High School Mariners narrowly lost 51-49 to Buckley High School of Sherman Oaks in the Buckley Tournament Friday, December 8th.
The Mariners (2-1) took a 27-21 lead by halftime, but Buckley came back to take the lead with 19 points in the third quarter and held on for the victory in the final quarter.
St. Monica won its first two games of the tournament against Pilgrim and Campbell Hall high schools.
The Mariners will next play at Malibu High School at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 14th.
The St. Bernard High School Vikings lost 69-37 to Torrance High School in a non-league game Monday, December 11th.
Kesha Brooks scored 18 points in the game to lead St. Bernard, which trailed 36-15 at halftime.
The Santa Monica High School Vikings were defeated 63-50 by Narbonne High School in a non-league game Saturday, December 9th.
The Vikings (5-3) will next host Brentwood High School at 7 p.m. Friday, December 15th.
