Comedian and impressionist Vincent Cook will perform the one-man show ALI: The Man. The Myth. The People’s Champion, which highlights legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali’s historic battles in the ring and out, at the Santa Monica Playhouse.
The one-night-only performance is scheduled at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2 on the playhouse main stage, 1211 Fourth St., Santa Monica.
Conceived and performed by Cook, ALI goes beyond the stories, feature films and documentaries and digs into the soul of the man loved and respected by millions, a playhouse spokesperson said.
Directed by filmmaker, manager and veteran theatre artist Tony Spires, ALI shares the iconic champion’s quiet moments, his intimate feelings as well as his public triumphs.
Outspoken and larger-than-life, Ali is also depicted as a sensitive, thoughtful and oftentimes comical man who loves humanity and champions world peace.
As a stand-up comedian and all around entertainer, Cook has toured as the opening act for the late singer Luther Vandross, and musicians Patti Labelle, Kenny G, The Temptations, New Edition, Ray Goodman and Brown and many others.
Legendary comedian Richard Pryor handpicked Cook for his last live stand-up comedy tour. Cook also worked with Oscar-nominated actor Will Smith and Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx in the movie “Ali.”
Tickets are $18 for general admission, or $15 for students.
