Otis College of Art and Design in Westchester has received a $150,000 grant from the James Irvine Foundation for the ongoing support of O TEAM (Otis Teens, Educators, Artists and Mentors Initiative) and the planning of its Otis Media Arts Initiative.
Since 2005, O TEAM has provided a gateway for underserved youths into higher education and the workforce. Based on the learning lessons of the last three years, Otis has a clearer understanding of how it can use its resources and expertise to deliver a sustainable program that will have a greater impact on how media and visual arts are learned and taught at the high school level. With the Media Arts Initiative, Otis will stimulate systematic change at all levels of learning and teaching of media arts.
Given the high demand for innovative approaches to new media such as the Internet, cell phones, video games, animation, television, print, radio and digital and film photography, the media arts are positioned as a momentous industry of the 21st century. Otis has established this media arts program to not only provide educators with new models of research and technologies in media arts, but to give students from all backgrounds opportunities to expand their knowledge in this critical and growing field.
The Otis Media Arts Initiative will: 1) provide high school students with digital media arts knowledge applicable for college and careers; 2) increase teacher capacity and content knowledge in the media arts; and 3) help school districts and individual schools develop and implement a media arts program that mirrors higher education and industry standards.
The project will have measurable outcomes, provide real and tangible benefits to all invested parties, and will develop a model of sustainability.
